The Quick Answer

MacTech Pro upgrades, replaces and recovers data from the SSD in every MacBook, Intel and Apple Silicon, in Dubai. On older Intel MacBooks with a removable blade SSD (the 2013–2017 Air and 2013–2015 Retina Pro), we simply fit a larger, faster SSD. On the MacBook Air and Pro with M1, M2, M3, M4 or M5 chips, and on the 2016–2020 Intel models, the storage is soldered NAND flash on the logic board, so we upgrade or replace it at component level — removing the original chips and fitting higher-capacity NAND, then pairing and restoring it. This is specialist micro-soldering work, not a simple drive swap. If your MacBook SSD has failed, won’t mount, or the Mac won’t boot, we also replace the failed storage and attempt to recover your data. Every SSD job in Dubai starts with a free diagnostic and a fixed price you approve first, comes with a 3-month warranty, and is backed by free pickup and delivery across Dubai.

Overview

Dubai’s MacBook SSD & storage specialists

MacTech Pro handles every kind of MacBook SSD work in Dubai: upgrading to more storage, replacing a failed drive, and recovering data when an SSD has broken. Storage is one area where MacBooks have changed enormously, from easily-swapped blade drives on older models to soldered NAND flash on the logic board of every modern machine, and getting it right depends on knowing exactly what your MacBook has and what is realistically possible.

On older Intel MacBooks the SSD is a removable blade, so an upgrade is a quick, affordable swap to a larger, faster drive. On the M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5 MacBooks, and the 2016–2020 Intel models, the storage is soldered to the board, so upgrading or replacing it is precise component-level work, the kind of micro-soldering we specialise in. Whatever your model, MacBook SSD upgrade and replacement in Dubai is handled in-house, with an honest assessment, a free diagnostic, and a fixed price agreed before any work begins. And if your drive has failed, we will tell you frankly what can and cannot be recovered.

Services

Three SSD jobs, all in-house

There are three different SSD jobs people come to us for. We do all of them, in-house.

1. SSD upgrade — more storage and speed

Out of space, or want your MacBook faster? An SSD upgrade gives you more capacity and, on older machines, a noticeable speed boost. On removable-SSD Intel models we fit a larger blade drive; on Apple Silicon and soldered Intel models we upgrade the NAND flash at board level. Either way you keep your MacBook and get the storage you actually need.

2. SSD replacement — a failed or dying drive

If your SSD has failed, is throwing disk errors, won’t mount, or the Mac won’t boot, we replace the failed storage and restore your MacBook to full working order. On soldered-storage models this means replacing the NAND flash chips at component level.

3. Data recovery — from a broken or dead SSD

If your SSD has stopped working and your files are trapped on it, we attempt data recovery as part of the job. What is recoverable depends on the type of failure, and on modern MacBooks the built-in encryption matters, which we explain honestly below. We also run dedicated MacBook data recovery and broken-MacBook data recovery services for tougher cases.

Coverage

SSD across every MacBook, Intel & M-chip

What’s possible with your SSD depends entirely on your MacBook, because Apple changed how storage works over the years. Here is how it maps, and we handle all of it.

Removable-SSD MacBooks (older Intel)

From roughly 2013 to 2017, many MacBooks used a removable PCIe blade SSD, the 2013–2017 MacBook Air, the 2013–2015 Retina MacBook Pro, and the 2016–2017 two-port 13-inch Pro. On these, an upgrade or replacement is a straightforward swap: we fit a larger, faster blade SSD, clone or reinstall your system, and you’re done. This is the most affordable kind of SSD upgrade.

MacBook Air (2013–2017)

The 2013–2017 MacBook Air uses a removable PCIe blade SSD. We upgrade it to a larger capacity or replace a failed one quickly and affordably.

Retina MacBook Pro 13″ & 15″ (2013–2015)

The 2013–2015 Retina MacBook Pro also uses a removable PCIe blade SSD, so a capacity upgrade or replacement is a simple swap.

Soldered-SSD MacBooks (newer Intel & all Apple Silicon)

From 2016–2017 onward, Apple began soldering the storage to the logic board, first on the higher-end Intel models, then with the T2 chip, and on every Apple Silicon MacBook. On these there is no drive to unplug: the storage is NAND flash chips fixed to the board. Upgrading or replacing it is component-level micro-soldering, the original NAND is removed and higher-capacity NAND fitted, then paired and restored. It is specialist work, and exactly what we do.

2016–2020 Intel MacBook Pro (T2)

The 2016–2020 Intel MacBook Pro (and T2-equipped models) have soldered NAND. We upgrade or replace the storage at board level, with the T2 encryption considerations explained below.

Why soldered storage isn’t a simple swap

Because the NAND is fixed to the board and paired to the Mac, it can’t be popped out and replaced like a blade drive. The job needs micro-soldering, the correct NAND, and re-pairing and restoring, which is why it is a specialist service rather than a quick swap.

Apple Silicon

M1–M5 SSD upgrades, explained

This is the part most people ask about, so here is the honest, complete picture for the latest machines.

M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5 SSD upgrades

Yes, we upgrade the storage on Apple Silicon MacBooks, M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5, but it is important to understand how. On these machines the storage is soldered NAND flash on the logic board, not a removable SSD, and the storage controller lives inside the Apple chip. So an “SSD upgrade” here means replacing the NAND flash chips with higher-capacity ones at component level, then pairing and restoring the machine. Board-level work like this is led by Dan, our lead technician, on proper micro-soldering equipment.

How the Apple Silicon NAND upgrade works

We remove the original NAND flash chips under controlled hot-air rework, fit higher-capacity NAND matched to your model, then pair the new storage to your MacBook and restore macOS in DFU mode. Done correctly, your MacBook simply reports more storage and runs exactly as before.

Is it worth it, and is it safe?

For machines where Apple’s own storage upgrade was very expensive at purchase, a NAND upgrade can be excellent value. It is specialist work with inherent risk, which is why we assess your specific machine first, explain the options honestly, and only proceed once you approve. We always recommend a full backup before any storage work.

Which models we cover

We cover the full Apple Silicon range, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M2, M2 Pro, M2 Max, M3, M4 and M5 chips. There is also a dedicated MacBook Air M1 SSD upgrade page for that specific model.

Faults

SSD problems we fix

SSD faults show up in several ways. These are the storage problems we diagnose and fix most often.

SSD not detected

Storage missing in Disk Utility or at startup. Repair or replace.

Won’t boot / question mark

Mac won’t start, flashing folder or question mark. Storage fault.

Very slow / freezing

Sluggish performance and freezes from a failing or full SSD.

Corrupt files / errors

Disk errors, corrupt files, or volumes that won’t mount.

Out of storage

Disk full warnings. Upgrade to a larger SSD or NAND.

Dead / failed SSD

Storage completely failed. Replacement plus data-recovery attempt.

After liquid damage

Storage affected by a spill. Assessed and repaired or replaced.

SMART / health warnings

Drive health warnings telling you to back up. Replace before it fails.

Common cases

SSD situations we hear most

SSD questions tend to come in a few familiar shapes. Here are the situations our Dubai customers describe most, and what each usually means.

“I keep running out of storage”

The most common reason for an upgrade. Whether your MacBook has a removable blade or soldered NAND, we can fit more capacity so you stop juggling files and deleting things to make room.

“My MacBook has suddenly become really slow”

A drive that’s nearly full, or an SSD that’s starting to fail, both cause slowdowns and freezes. We check the storage health and tell you whether an upgrade or a replacement is the fix.

“My MacBook won’t turn on / shows a question mark”

A flashing folder or question mark, or a Mac that won’t boot, often points to a storage fault. We diagnose whether it’s the SSD, the board or software, and recover your data where we can.

“My SSD died and my files are stuck on it”

We replace the failed storage and attempt recovery. On encrypted modern Macs the chances depend on whether the board and Secure Enclave still work, which we assess and explain honestly before you commit.

Data recovery

Recovering data from a failed SSD

If your SSD has failed and your data is on it, here is the honest picture, because modern MacBooks are encrypted and that changes what is possible.

What we can recover, and what we can’t

When the storage fails but the board works

If the NAND or a removable SSD has failed but the logic board, controller and (on modern Macs) the Secure Enclave are intact, there is often a good chance of recovery, by repairing the storage path or reading the data with the original board. We attempt this as part of the job.

The encryption factor on T2 and Apple Silicon

On T2 Intel and all Apple Silicon MacBooks, your data is encrypted and the keys are tied to the Secure Enclave on the original board. This means recovery requires the original board to be functional, the data cannot be read by simply moving the NAND elsewhere. If the board or Secure Enclave is damaged, encrypted data may be unrecoverable, and we will tell you that honestly rather than raise false hope.

Why backups matter

Because soldered, encrypted storage can fail in ways that make recovery impossible, a regular backup (Time Machine or cloud) is the only true safety net. We always recommend one, and we can help you set it up after a repair.

Our approach to your data

We treat your data with care and confidentiality, attempt recovery wherever it is realistic, and are upfront about the chances for your specific failure. For complex cases we have dedicated data recovery and broken-MacBook recovery services.

Why upgrade

The benefits of an SSD upgrade

Why upgrade your MacBook SSD instead of buying a new machine? A few good reasons.

The benefits of an SSD upgrade

More space, without a new Mac

A storage upgrade gives you the capacity you need, for photos, video, projects and apps, at a fraction of the cost of replacing the whole MacBook.

More speed on older machines

On older Intel MacBooks, especially any still on a hard drive or an early SSD, fitting a modern SSD transforms responsiveness, faster boots, faster apps, less waiting.

Extending your MacBook’s life

A bigger, healthier SSD can give a capable MacBook several more useful years, keeping a machine you know and like rather than starting over.

Warning signs

Signs your SSD needs attention

Not sure whether your SSD needs attention? These signs point to storage.

Performance warning signs

Slowing down, freezing or beachballing

A MacBook that has become slow, freezes, or shows the spinning beachball often has a failing or full SSD. A health check tells you whether to upgrade or replace.

Disk-full warnings

Constant “your disk is almost full” messages mean it’s time for more storage, which an upgrade solves.

Failure warning signs

Disk errors, corrupt files or SMART warnings

Disk errors, files that won’t open, or a drive-health warning are signs the SSD is failing. Back up now and have it checked, replacing it before it dies fully protects your data.

Won’t boot, or a flashing question mark

A Mac that won’t start or shows a flashing folder/question mark often has a storage fault. We diagnose whether it’s the SSD, the board, or software, so you get the right fix.

Why MacTech Pro

An honest, independent storage specialist

MacTech Pro is an independent Apple-device specialist in Dubai Sports City, and storage is an area where honesty and skill both matter. We are one of very few centres in the UAE doing true board-level NAND upgrades on Apple Silicon, so an upgrade that an authorised counter would say is impossible is something we can actually do. We give straight answers on what’s realistic, especially on data recovery, fit quality storage, pair and restore properly, and back our work with a 3-month warranty. Pickup and delivery across Dubai is free, and our pricing is transparent with a fixed quote before any work.

Pricing

SSD upgrade & replacement prices in Dubai

SSD pricing depends on your model, the capacity you want, and whether it’s a removable swap or board-level NAND work. A blade-SSD upgrade on an older Intel model is far cheaper than an Apple Silicon NAND upgrade, which is specialist micro-soldering. The figures below are realistic starting points; your exact price, including the storage itself, is confirmed after the free diagnostic. If we can’t complete the job, you don’t pay for the attempt.

Why MacTech Pro

Why bring it to MacTech Pro

  • We repair the board at component level, not just swap it. On the M1, M1 Pro and M1 Max, a single failed component is usually the whole fault. Repairing that part is cheaper than a board swap and keeps your storage and data intact.
  • Free, honest diagnosis and a fixed price first. You see the real fault and the real cost before any work. No fix, no fee.
  • Genuine or OEM-grade parts, fitted and tested. That matters more on these models, where the mini-LED display and large batteries are expensive to get wrong.
  • Work done by Dan's bench. Power-rail diagnosis and micro-soldering on Apple Silicon by one of Dubai's more experienced technicians, with 380+ reviews behind the shop.
  • Your data comes first. These are pro machines, and we treat the data on them as the priority on every board and liquid job.
  • Free pickup and delivery across Dubai, secure courier to the rest of the UAE, and a 3-month warranty on the repair.

FAQ

MacBook SSD upgrade & replacement — frequently asked questions

It depends on your model and capacity. A blade-SSD upgrade on an older Intel MacBook starts from around AED 450 including the drive, while an Apple Silicon or soldered-NAND upgrade (board-level micro-soldering) starts from around AED 900. We confirm the exact price, including the storage, after a free diagnostic.

Yes, but it is specialist work. On Apple Silicon the storage is soldered NAND flash on the logic board, not a removable SSD, so we upgrade it by replacing the NAND chips with higher-capacity ones at component level, then pairing and restoring the machine. It is micro-soldering, not a simple swap, and we assess your machine and explain the options first.

No. On every M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5 MacBook the storage is NAND flash soldered to the logic board, and the controller is inside the Apple chip. There is no drive to unplug, which is why an upgrade is board-level micro-soldering rather than a swap.

Mainly the 2013–2017 MacBook Air, the 2013–2015 Retina MacBook Pro, and the 2016–2017 two-port 13-inch Pro, which use a removable PCIe blade SSD. On these we fit a larger, faster blade drive quickly and affordably.

Yes. We replace failed storage on every MacBook, swapping the blade SSD on removable models, or replacing the NAND flash at board level on soldered models, and restore your MacBook to full working order. We also attempt to recover your data as part of the job.

We attempt it, and what’s recoverable depends on the failure. If the storage failed but the board and Secure Enclave are intact, there’s often a good chance. On T2 and Apple Silicon Macs the data is encrypted to the original board, so if the board is damaged, encrypted data may be unrecoverable, we’ll tell you honestly for your case.

An upgrade replaces the storage, so we clone or restore your system to the new SSD, and on a healthy machine your data carries over. We always recommend a full backup before any storage work as essential good practice, because storage work inherently involves your data.

More space alone mostly prevents the slowdowns that happen when a drive is nearly full. On older Intel MacBooks, moving from a hard drive or an early SSD to a modern one gives a big speed boost. On Apple Silicon the storage is already fast, so an upgrade is mainly about capacity.

A removable blade-SSD upgrade can often be completed the same day. A board-level NAND upgrade on Apple Silicon takes more careful bench time. We give you a realistic timeframe with your fixed quote and confirm parts before you bring it in.

We can supply quality storage matched to your model, and the price we quote includes it. If you have a specific drive in mind for a removable-SSD model, we’re happy to discuss using it. For soldered models the NAND must be the correct type, which we source.

It can be. A Mac that won’t start, or shows a flashing folder or question mark, often has a storage fault, but it can also be the board or software. Our free diagnostic identifies the real cause so you only pay for the right repair.

Yes, at board level. These models (and T2-equipped Macs) have soldered NAND, so we upgrade or replace the storage with micro-soldering, then pair and restore it, taking the T2 encryption into account.

Almost always, especially given how expensive Apple’s built-in storage upgrades are at purchase. A storage upgrade gives you the capacity you need and keeps the MacBook you already know, for a fraction of a new machine.

Yes. We collect your MacBook from anywhere in Dubai, carry out the SSD upgrade, replacement or recovery, and return it free of charge, with tracking throughout. Walk-in drop-off at our Dubai Sports City centre is welcome too.

Yes. Every SSD upgrade and replacement comes with a 3-month warranty covering the work and the storage fitted, plus our No Fix, No Fee promise. If the same fault returns within the warranty period, we put it right at no cost.

Back up immediately, then have it checked. A SMART or health warning means the drive is degrading and could fail, so replacing it before it dies fully protects your data. Bring it in for a free diagnostic and we’ll advise.

Yes. If your MacBook also needs, say, a battery or a cooling service, we can do the storage work alongside it in one visit, which is convenient and often better value. Tell us everything at the diagnostic.

Usually yes, on the new storage, we either clone your existing system across or do a clean install of macOS and restore your data. Your MacBook comes back ready to use, set up the way it was wherever possible.

At MacTech Pro, Stadium Point Building, Office 311, Dubai Sports City. We serve customers right across Dubai with free pickup and delivery, so wherever you are, you can have your storage upgraded, replaced or recovered.

Yes. We service MacBook storage regardless of where the machine was bought, the work depends only on the model and the storage type. Tell us the model and what you need and we’ll advise with the same free diagnostic and 3-month warranty.

It is specialist micro-soldering, so there is inherent risk, which is exactly why it should be done by experienced technicians on proper equipment. We assess your machine first, explain the options honestly, recommend a backup, and only proceed once you approve.

On removable-SSD models, often yes, you can fit a larger blade drive. On soldered models we fit higher-capacity NAND than the original where the board and pairing support it, which we confirm at the diagnostic for your specific machine.

It depends on your model and storage type. On removable-SSD Macs a wide range of capacities is possible. On Apple Silicon and soldered models we fit higher-capacity NAND that’s compatible with your board. We’ll confirm the realistic options for your MacBook at the free diagnostic.

Yes, and it’s one of the best upgrades for an older Intel MacBook still on a spinning hard drive. Moving to an SSD dramatically improves boot times, app loading and overall responsiveness, often making an old machine feel new again.

If you’d like, yes. When we move you to new storage we can securely erase the old drive so none of your data remains on it, or return it to you. Just let us know your preference when you drop off or we collect the MacBook.

Yes. Storage that reports the wrong size, won’t mount, or shows errors in Disk Utility usually has a failing SSD or a connection/board fault. We diagnose the cause and repair or replace the storage so it reports and works correctly.

External storage is a cheap way to add space for files you don’t need fast, but it’s separate and slower, and doesn’t help if your internal drive is failing or full of system data. An internal upgrade gives you fast, built-in capacity. We’re happy to advise which suits you.

Not usually, a failing SSD mainly risks your data and performance rather than other hardware. But it can make the whole machine unstable and lead to data loss, so it’s worth replacing once it shows signs of failing rather than waiting.

Yes. We work with businesses and offices across Dubai and can upgrade or service storage on multiple MacBooks together, with collection and delivery arranged. Tell us your fleet and what you need and we’ll advise on turnaround.

If your MacBook is still under Apple warranty, third-party internal work can affect that cover, so it’s worth weighing up. Many machines we upgrade are out of warranty, where a board-level NAND upgrade is great value. We’ll give you honest advice for your situation.

On Apple Silicon, memory is part of the chip and can’t be upgraded, only storage can be addressed (at board level). On older Intel models where RAM is upgradeable, we can do both together. We’ll tell you exactly what’s possible for your specific MacBook.

Just send us your model or the model number (the A-number on the underside) and we’ll tell you immediately whether it has a removable blade SSD or soldered NAND, and what your upgrade and replacement options are. The free diagnostic confirms it on the machine.

To a point, yes, SSDs slow down when they run very low on free space, and macOS needs room to work. Freeing space or upgrading to a larger SSD restores normal speed. If it stays slow even with free space, the drive may be failing, which we can check.

For removable-SSD upgrades and replacements, often yes, the same day once we have the right drive. Board-level NAND work on Apple Silicon takes more time. Call or WhatsApp us with your model and we’ll confirm turnaround and parts before you visit.
