Why this screen costs more than a 13 inch Pro or an Air
Fair question, because the 14 inch Pro is only slightly bigger than the 13 inch models we replace for 850 and 950 AED.
The difference is the panel technology. The A2442 has a mini-LED display with thousands of tiny LEDs behind the LCD, grouped into dimming zones that switch on and off independently. That's what gives it 1000 nits of full screen brightness, 1600 nits peak for HDR, and true blacks. It also runs at up to 120Hz with ProMotion. The 13 inch Pro and the Air use a conventional edge lit LED panel at 400 or 500 nits and 60Hz.
A mini-LED panel is a more expensive part from Apple's supply chain. Labour on the repair is a little more involved but not dramatically so. The price gap is almost entirely the part.
Checking you have the A2442
The A2442 is the 14 inch MacBook Pro released in October 2021 with the M1 Pro or M1 Max chip. It was the first 14 inch model, the one that brought back HDMI, the SD card slot and MagSafe, and the first with the notch at the top of the screen.
Turn the laptop over and read the small print at the bottom of the base. It should say "Model A2442". If you can't make it out, go to the Apple menu and click on About This Mac. Apple M1 Pro or Apple M1 Max under Chip, with a 14 inch screen, is the A2442.
Two later models look the same from the outside and share most of the specification. The 2023 14 inch with M2 Pro or M2 Max is the A2779. The 2023 14 inch with M3, M3 Pro or M3 Max is the A2918 or A2992. The price on this page is for the A2442 specifically, so check the number before booking and we'll quote correctly for whichever one you have.

One detail people find interesting: the area below the notch is 3024 x 1890, which is a 16:10 shape like older MacBooks. The extra 74 rows at the top are where the menu bar sits, either side of the camera housing. So you aren't losing screen to the notch, you're gaining a strip above the old boundary.

What mini-LED changes about the repair
Most of the process is the same as any MacBook screen. Two things are different, and both are about testing.
First, local dimming. The panel includes many dimming zones, and replacement is only appropriate if all of them function properly. We evaluate this by displaying a completely black screen with small bright objects and observing the backlight. A dead zone appears as an area that neither brightens nor darkens. We also inspect areas that flicker at low brightness.
Second, HDR and ProMotion. A standard brightness test won't get the panel above 500 nits, so we play HDR content to verify it can actually hit its maximum. We then verify that the refresh rate switches properly, from 24Hz for video playback to 120Hz during scrolling. A monitor that remains stuck at 60Hz or refuses to enter HDR mode isn't a suitable substitute, even if it appears acceptable on the desktop.
We also want to set expectations on one thing that Mini-LED panels show a faint glow around bright objects on a black background. A white cursor on a black screen, subtitles on a dark film. This is called blooming and it's a characteristic of the technology, not a defect. Your original screen did it too. We mention it because people occasionally see it after a replacement, assume the new panel is faulty, and it isn't.
Original Apple panel only
On the A2442 we fit original Apple panels only. We are not use an aftermarket mini-LED panel we'd put our name to. The few that exist don't match the dimming zone count, don't reach the same peak brightness, and in our experience have more early failures than the conventional aftermarket panels for cheaper models.
If someone offers you a 14 inch Pro screen replacement well below this price, ask them specifically whether the panel is mini-LED with ProMotion, and ask them to demonstrate 120Hz and HDR before you pay. If they can't, you're looking at a downgrade.
True Tone and ProMotion after the replacement

True Tone calibration on Apple silicon MacBooks is stored on the panel. Replace the panel without transferring that data and the True Tone option disappears from System Settings. We move the calibration to the new panel during the repair, so the toggle is there and behaves as it did before.
ProMotion is a function of the original panel, so as long as the replacement is a real Apple mini-LED panel, 120Hz works. We confirm it in testing rather than assume.
What we usually see on the 14 inch Pro
This laptop is portable. It's bulkier than a 13-inch model, fits easily in backpacks, and is frequently the laptop people carry to client meetings and through airports. Thus, the damage usually comes from transportation rather than from the desk. Pressure damage occurs more frequently than any other type. A charger or hard drive resting against the bag's lid, or the laptop buried at the bottom of a stack. There's no crack outside. Inside, you may find a dark discoloration, or a series of colored streaks, or an area of the panel that has turned permanently black. On mini-LED, this can occasionally appear as a patch where the backlight functions but the image does n't, creating an unusual look that unsettles users.
Next is closing the lid on something. The gap between the keys and the glass is tiny. An earbud, a cable end, a pen. The crack starts at that exact point.
Then drops. A corner drop cracks the panel and can bend the lid. We check the lid before quoting.
And sometimes the panel fails with no damage at all. A dimming zone that stays dark, a strip along one edge that's noticeably dimmer, flicker at low brightness. We work out whether that's the panel, the display cable or the logic board before charging anything, because those are three different repairs at three different prices.
The repair, step by step
At MacTech Pro, Repair and replacement are completed under Two to three hours. The panel swap itself isn't the slow part. The adhesive setting and the testing are.

- The lid is opened, the damaged panel is removed, and all old adhesive is thoroughly cleaned off. Excess adhesive is often the reason replacement screens appear slightly raised on one side. True Tone calibration data is transferred to the new panel.
- The original mini-LED panel is fitted with original Apple adhesive strips and left to set under even little pressure.

The 3 month warranty, and what counts as a fault
If the panel we fitted arises a problem within three months, we fix it free of cost. Check the Dead pixels, lines, a dimming zone that stops working, flicker, backlight faults, the display lifting at an edge. Bring it back and we'll sort it.
What isn't covered is new damage on macbook: a fresh crack, a bent lid from a drop, liquid inside. And, as mentioned above, blooming around bright objects on dark backgrounds is normal for mini-LED and isn't a fault.
