Any of these three will tell you what you need to know. The first is built into your Mac; the others go deeper.
| Method | How | What It Shows |
|---|---|---|
| System Settings | Apple menu → System Settings → Battery → Battery Health | 'Normal' or 'Service Recommended', plus Maximum Capacity %. Below 80% is Apple's replacement threshold. |
| coconutBattery (free app) | Download and open the free third-party app | Live cycle count, design vs current full-charge capacity, and manufacture date — the most accurate quick check. |
| Terminal command | Run: system_profiler SPPowerDataType | The same cycle count, condition, and capacity figures with nothing to install. |
If you'd rather have a professional read it, MacTech Pro checks your battery health and cycle count free of charge at the workshop — no obligation.
Apple rates M-series MacBook batteries for around 1,000 charge cycles while still holding 80% of their original capacity. Older Intel models were rated for 1,000 too; the much older pre-2010 machines managed only 300–500. One charge cycle equals a full 0–100% discharge, so two half-charges count as a single cycle — which is why a battery lasts years before it's truly worn.
It's time to think about a replacement if you notice any of these:
SWOLLEN BATTERY — STOP NOW
If you can see or feel the bottom case bulging, or the trackpad has been pushed up, stop using and stop charging the MacBook right now. A swelling lithium-pouch cell is venting flammable electrolyte, and continued charging risks thermal runaway (fire). Power it down, unplug it, and keep it somewhere cool and away from anything flammable until you can get it to us.
Bring a swollen MacBook to MacTech Pro the same day. We safely bench-discharge swollen cells in a fireproof safe, then dispose of them through a licensed e-waste channel. There's a small extra disposal fee for swollen batteries, which simply covers our licensed-disposal cost — we don't profit from it.
A real-world warning for Dubai: swollen batteries and summer car heat are a dangerous mix. We've seen several swollen-battery incidents linked to MacBooks left in hot parked cars. Never leave a swelling MacBook in a parked car, especially in summer.
From late 2018 onward, Apple began bonding the battery cells directly into the aluminium top case. By the M1 era (2020 and later) the cells are held with a strong adhesive that has to be released with careful prying and a safe solvent (isopropyl alcohol) without puncturing the cell.
That's why a modern MacBook battery replacement takes MacTech Pro around 60–90 minutes at the bench, rather than the 20-minute swap an old 2012 MacBook Pro allowed. We use the proper adhesive remover and replace the foam shielding that sits beneath the cell. Most cheap shops skip that foam — and that's exactly what causes the 'battery rattle' people complain about a couple of months later. Done properly, it stays silent and secure.

This is where the workmanship shows, and where MacTech Pro differs from shops that cut corners.
iFixit and similar kits sell battery-and-adhesive-remover bundles for a few hundred dirhams, and the saving is tempting. The risks usually aren't worth it:
In our experience about one in four people who attempt a DIY swap end up bringing us a half-finished MacBook for a far more expensive rescue. The small amount you'd save rarely covers the risk, which is why MacTech Pro does it properly, on the bench, the first time.
